Privacy Policies Revealed!
This month we will briefly discuss Privacy Policies and how
they should work.
Privacy policies, the fine print found listed at the bottom
of web pages and program licensing agreements, are the most easily accessible
means of avoiding unwanted junk mail and email. Companies use privacy policies
to lay out exactly what information is collected from you, the user, and how it
will be used by that company’s staff and business associates. Note that I did
not say that the existence of a privacy policy precludes the company in question
from gathering and reselling (or renting) marketing data about you, so reading
privacy policies is extremely important.
Or rather, that is how privacy policies should work.
According to a recent researched article in the Washington Post, the sad news is
that privacy policies are optional and there is no enforcement agency to check
the validity of a company's privacy policy. The Post's article is quite lengthy
and gives several specific instances where a company's actions directly
contradicted their privacy policy, as well as detailing marketing jargon and
current legislation relating to online privacy. The article is well-written and

All of this begs the question, "What can I do to protect my
privacy?" The answer is still to review a company's privacy policy before
instigating any transactions with them. Contact the company via email or
telephone and have them detail to you how your information will be used. If you
think that a company is not honoring their stated policies, contact them and, if
necessary, file a complaint against them with their local chapter of the Better
Business Bureau.
