NETWORKING FOR DUMMIES PART #4 (CONCLUSION)
Imagine my surprise when I started writing to you about Wireless LANs while
our "Wireless Office" project seemed only marginally successful. Here I am, the
CEO of an Internet company, writing to you about our experiences, and we are in
the middle of a bad one!
A couple of months ago we decided to buy a wireless router from Linksys:
WAP55AG. We installed it and I wrote to you about it in our March
Newsletter. However, we were experiencing unusual latency.
- In general, the period of time that one component in a system is spinning
its wheels waiting for another component. Latency, therefore, is wasted time.
For example, in accessing data on a disk, latency is defined as the time it
takes to position the proper sector under the read/write head.
- In networking, latency is the amount of time it takes a packet to travel
from source to destination. Together, latency and bandwidth define the speed
and capacity of a network
Definitions from
Webopedia.com.
After careful examination, Jason Ayers (our VP of Operations) noted that the
router rebooted itself every so often. It was a simple hardware problem! We sent
the router back and got another one up and running.
The moral of the story? Wireless LANs work. If yours does not, make sure you
have purchased your equipment from a reputable vendor who will stand behind
their product. This concludes our 4 part series on Networking for Dummies.

WHAT AILS YOU?
Sometimes you need more medical advice than “Scrubs” or “E.R”. can provide.
The gold standard is MedlinePlus at http://medlineplus.gov. It is a service of
the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health.
Once the preserve of physicians, this formidable database is now easier for
laypersons to use and is open to everyone. You can easily search for
authoritative and up to date information on over 650 diseases and conditions.
There are also lists of hospitals and physicians, a medical dictionary, an
illustrated medical encyclopedia, health information in Spanish, extensive
information on prescription and nonprescription drugs, health information from
the media and links to thousands of clinical trials.
MedlinePlus is updated daily and unlike other medical sites, it doesn't pelt
you with ads or other sponsored editorials.

Hi,
My name is Timothy J. Kilkenny and I am the Founder & CEO of FullNet
Communications. My primary responsibility is making sure we have the right
people on board to meet your needs. It has been my good fortune to have had the
opportunity to assemble the finest team of individuals anywhere in Oklahoma.
We have evolved from an Internet Service Provider servicing primarily rural
Oklahoma, to a phone company (Competitive Local Exchange Carrier) because of
your requests and market demands. However, our primary reason for existence and
our company mission statement has not changed. You are the reason we are here!
On a personal note I have been blessed with three children. I have a son
(23), a daughter (21), and another son (19). I live on five acres in Newcastle
and have recently met a wonderful woman named Barbara. In my spare time I like
to watch boxing, play chess, surf the net, fly remote control airplanes, and
putter around my property. Oh, and did I mention that I am a novice guinea
rancher? Guineas are African chickens with an appetite for bugs. For further information on guineas just
visit
Google.
Enthusiastically,
Timothy J. Kilkenny
